Law and government

Downtown Austin and the State Capitol as seen
from the Congress Avenue Bridge over Town Lake.
Austin is administered by a city council of seven
members, each of them elected by the entire city,
and by an elected mayor under the mayor-council
government system of municipal governance.
Council and mayoral elections are non-partisan
(although most Austin mayors and council members
are Democrats), with a runoff in case there is no majority
winner. Austin remains an anomaly among large Texas
cities in that the council is not elected by districts.
The current mayor of Austin is Will Wynn
